Queenstown is renowned for its incredible natural scenery and outdoor adventures. But this winter, visitors have the chance to experience something truly magical… The highly anticipated return of the LUMA Southern Lights Project.
The LUMA Southern Lights Project is an award-winning arts and culture festival that has captivated Queenstown since its debut in 2015. The immersive event blends audiovisual technology with the beauty of Queenstown’s botanical gardens to create an enchanting multi-sensory experience. From 30th May to 3rd June, over the King’s Birthday Weekend, the Queenstown Gardens will once again be transformed into an exhibition of light, sound, and artistry.
As you wander along the trails, you’ll be dazzled by an extraordinary display of light projections and lasers that illuminate the gardens in a kaleidoscope of colour. From dancing water features, to trees transformed into living canvases, every twist and turn will provide a new experience. Enjoy the live music, local food, and a family-friendly atmosphere in a night of pure magic that will leave you spellbound.
The 2023 edition brought together over 500 contributors including artists, organisers and volunteers, showcasing a diverse range of interactive light sculptures. The artworks celebrated themes of interconnectedness between humanity and the environment, focusing on family (whānau) and land (whenua). Designed to inspire and connect people, the event emphasised sustainability and the importance of preserving our natural surroundings.
Visitors are encouraged to join in and dress up, and complimentary park and ride services will be available from the Queenstown Shopping Centre.

LUMA is just the beginning of an incredible trip to Queenstown. The region is a true winter paradise, offering an exciting array of activities to suit every type of traveler.
For the outdoor enthusiasts, world-class skiing and snowboarding awaits at the renowned Coronet Peak and The Remarkables, open from 15th June. Adrenaline junkies can indulge their thirst for adventure with pursuits like bungy jumping, skydiving, and jet boating, all against the stunning background of Queenstown’s dramatic mountainous landscapes.
For those seeking a more relaxed pace, Queenstown offers plenty of opportunities to soak in the natural beauty that surrounds the town. Visitors can venture on scenic hikes or leisurely bike tours. For a unique perspective, ride the Coronet Peak gondola with a sightseeing pass to admire the alpine views from above. Afterwards, relax at one of Queenstown’s hot pools or luxury day spas.
Complementing the outdoor adventures on offer, Queenstown’s vibrant après scene, fine dining options, and wine tasting tours ensure a well-rounded experience for all visitors. Family-friendly activities like ice skating, snow-shoeing, and luging at the top of the Skyline Gondola provide entertainment for all ages.
