Pen-y-bryn Lodge was built as a private residence in 1889 by the famed architectural firm of Forrester & Lemon for local businessman John Bulleid and his wife. Pen-y-bryn is Welsh for “Top of the Hill” and indeed the house sits atop South Hill, one of Oamaru’s most sought-after districts. Reputed to be the largest single-storey timber dwelling in Australasia, the house has kept true to its Victorian heritage and today offers discerning guests the perfect combination of old world elegance and modern amenities.

When you arrive at Pen-y-bryn, you will be welcomed at your car and offered assistance with your belongings into your guest room and once you are settled in, you will be offered a beverage and a tour of the lodge. Dinner is available on-site, and breakfast is included in the nightly tariff.

During your stay, you will have full use of all facilities in the lodge, free and unlimited ultra-fast broadband internet access and complimentary soft drinks, tea and coffee.

THE GARDEN ROOM: Located on the upstairs level of the “annex” building, the Garden Room is the largest room, and the ensuite bathroom features a separate bath and shower.  The room overlooks the original Pen-y-bryn gardens and is air conditioned.

THE NEST ROOM: Located on the upstairs level of the “Annex” building, the Nest Room is a large room and is probably our favourite with a stone feature wall,  and a view out toward the Pacific Ocean and the Kakanui Ranges. This romantic room features a sunken bedroom area and a separate seating area, and the ensuite bathroom features a separate bath and shower.

THE PARK ROOM: Located on the upstairs level of the “annex” building, the Park Room is a large room overlooking the extensive pottage garden within the Lodge grounds, with Awamoa Park in the background. The room also has feature stone walls, a separate seating area and the ensuite bathroom features separate bath and shower.

THE VICTORIA ROOM: located in the main Lodge building, this room is characterised by its antique oak furnishings. This room, which overlooks the Oamaru stone terrace and gardens, basks in the afternoon sun.  The en-suite has a beautiful period-style tile floor and has been designed to be accessible for guests with limited mobility.

THE ELIZABETH ROOM: Situated in the main Lodge building this room features an original large porcelain pedestal bath with Victorian brass fittings, and French doors leading into a private courtyard garden.
