A Fiordland helicopter flight offers an unforgettable way to experience one of New Zealandโs most remote and spectacular regions. Within minutes of take-off, you’re flying over dramatic alpine peaks, hidden valleys, and ancient glaciers, landscapes that are otherwise hours away or entirely off-limits by road. Hereโs what to expect from a journey through Fiordland by air.
Your adventure starts with lift-off from Queenstown, quickly gaining elevation over the picturesque suburb of Quail Rise. You may even spot our very own Pinnacle Villa, recognisable even from above by its distinctive architecture.
From there, youโll fly over Skippers Canyon Road, one of New Zealandโs most notorious roads. Cut by hand into sheer rock faces during the gold rush, it’s a white-knuckle drive by car – but much better admired from the air.
Depending on the season, Coronet Peak will be dotted with skiers or mountain bikers. You’ll get a birdโs-eye view of the Shotover River, once known as “the richest river in the world” by gold miners, thanks to the gold rush of the 1860s.

As the helicopter climbs higher into the Southern Alps, the scenery becomes even more dramatic. On a clear day, Mt Aspiring / Tititea, one of the tallest peaks in the Southern Alps, will come into view on your right hand side. Closer still is Mt Earnslaw / Pikirakatahi. Its alpine glacier is a challenge to reach on foot, but easily accessible by helicopter. You might recognise it from famous film franchises like The Lord of the Rings and Mission Impossible.
Flying over Glenorchy and past the historic docking site of the TSS Earnslaw, now relocated after the river washed it away, and youโll track the length of the Rees Valley and the Dart River. This area is home to the popular Dart River Jet Boat and Funyak tours, a firm favourite of our MajorDomo guests!
On rare days when the air is clear, you might even spot Aoraki / Mt Cook in the distance, New Zealandโs tallest peak, standing at 3,724 metres.

The flight path takes you high above multiple glaciers and remote alpine lakes before beginning the descent into the Sinbad Valley. The approach to Milford Sound / Piopiotahi, often called the eighth natural wonder of the world, is certainly a highlight of the trip as you experience a rare aerial perspective of one of New Zealand’s most iconic attractions. As you come into land, keep an eye out for the unmistakable Mitre Peak / Rahotu, rising nearly 1,700 metres straight from the water, as well as the thundering Stirling and Bowen Falls.
Milford Sound feels like another planet. Carved by glaciers over millions of years and rich in Mฤori legend, itโs as remote as it is awe-inspiring. No one lives here permanently, and youโll understand why. Itโs raw, pristine, and powerful.
Once you land, a short guided nature walk will take you through the rainforest to the edge of the fjord. Itโs quiet, without the disruption of tour buses or cruises. Take a moment to breathe in the sea air, admire the steep rock faces and waterfalls, and snap a few photos – although they simply wonโt do justice to the scale of the landscape!

The journey doesnโt stop at Milford Sound. Next up is a landing at Lake Erskine, a high-altitude glacial lake that can only be accessed by helicopter. Remote and spectacularly beautiful, itโs a popular choice for elopements, picnics and private photoshoots. The glacial lake water here is crystal-clear, straight from the glacier and safe to drink.
Here, you have the option to take part in a unique alpine experience: the Extreme Tee. Youโll get to practice your swing from the top of the world and tee off from the cliff’s edge using eco-friendly golf balls, sending them flying into the valley below.

A Fiordland helicopter flight from Queenstown certainly beats the long drive to Milford Sound, granting you a unique perspective of one of the world’s top travel destinations that most people never see. Whether you’re planning to tick off a bucket list item, seeking a unique proposal or elopement location, or to plan a memorable activity that will stand out from the rest of your trip, this is the experience to book!
