Your Last Minute Labour Weekend 2016 Destination
14 October 2016
We recommend kicking off the long weekend with pre-concert drinks and then moving over to the Memorial Hall at 8.30pm to hear one of New Zealand’s foremost jazz pianists and composers, Phil Broadhurst. Phil won the 2016 Tui Jazz Album of the Year.
Or if you share a love for the saxophone, perhaps Saturday will be your concert night. Saxophonist Nick Haines has released ten solo albums, has had two Gold status albums in New Zealand, and has won the Tui Jazz Album of the Year award three times!
Don’t miss a relaxed family day out in Arrowtown on Sunday with the free Arrowtown Day of Jazz! This will be a great chance to enjoy one of the many delicious eateries Arrowtown has to offer while jazz music filters through the village.
There will be 50 free and ticketed concerts at over 20 locations over the long weekend!
2. New Eateries and Bars
This hip makeover of one of Queenstown’s much loved hotels is a must-visit! Produce straight from the garden and orchard will find its way onto your plate. Order from the menu or if you’re feeling bold, trust the chef with a four course meal for $70.
Make the most of these lovely longer evenings this Labour weekend by visiting this gorgeous rooftop bar with fantastic views of Lake Wakatipu. The word on the street is that the espresso martini is up there with the best!
A new restaurant in the historic Eureka Building, Coalfire Barbecue Bar offers cooking inspired by pit masters and kitchens from around the globe. Dishes carry a distinctive smoky flavour that comes only from long slow hours over hot coals. Located in downtown Queenstown, it could be a great dinner spot before a night out at the Jazzfest!
3. Spring Golf
The days are getting longer and warmer and what better way to celebrate than with a round at one of Queenstown’s stunning golf courses. Enjoy lunch after a round at Jack’s Point Golf Club at their recently re-opened restaurant. Or why not couple a day on the green at Millbrook with the Spring Package at their luxury spa? Alternatively, if you’re staying closer to Arrowtown, let us book you a round at the Arrowtown Golf Club or at the championship golf course at The Hills Golf Club. Whatever your preference, MajorDomo can couple your accommodation booking with your tee and spa times.
4. Remarkables Markets Open
The markets at the Remarkables Park Red Barn open for the season on Saturday. Stroll down after 9am and check out local artisans selling crafts and gifts, and a tasty selection of local produce on offer.
With Wanaka only an hour drive from Queenstown, why not squeeze in a day trip over the Crown Range to admire some local artwork on exhibition at the Wanaka Arts Society? While in Wanaka, we highly recommend a coffee at Urban Grind cafe and brunch at Florences Foodstore & Cafe.
