Wanaka is an alpine paradise! Whatever the season, there’s something to offer for everyone. Here are our five favourite all-season activities in Wanaka!
One of Wanaka’s newest additions and already a firm favourite, Wild Wire is a climbing experience like no other! Scale a waterfall using a series of iron rungs, pegs, bridges and ladders, the Via Ferrata gives you access to climbing routes that would have normally been inaccessible.
The trip is split into 3 variations to cater to all levels of extreme, whether you bring the kids (minimum age 12) and take the easiest “Go Wild” Route or opt for the intermediate “Wild Thing” for something a little bit more adventurous, there is no experience required. Feeling really brave? Check out the experienced trail “Lord of the Rungs” which is the highest waterfall Via Ferrata in the world, finishing with a heli transfer return.
Traveling faster than you can figure out how to say Matukituki Valley, there is no NZ experience complete without a trip on a jet boat. And there are not many options more scenic than those in Wanaka – speeding up the Matukituki River on crystal clear glacial fed waters amongst the backcountry scenery reserved for only the most adventurous. Off the normal tourist tracks, and into Mount Aspiring National Park and the Te Wahipounamu world heritage area, this is Wanaka really showcasing the goods at high speed. What more could you want? Well, if you insist, tick more off the list and throw in a scenic bush hike, or a scenic helicopter flight with glacier landing as part of the same trip to get even more out of the experience.
Here is a workout for your brain – Wanaka is home to a lake, on an island, on a lake, on an island, in the sea. Yep, that hurt our heads too.
EcoWanaka will show you in person with a trip to Mou Waho Island, a predator free nature reserve Island located on Lake Wanaka. This gorgeous eco tour will take you by boat to the island, and guide you on a 60 minute hike up to the Lake for some seriously cool photo opportunities, enjoying high tea from the highest point on the island. Keep your eyes peeled for Bluff Weka which survive on this reserve despite being extinct on the main land since 1920, and give back to the environment but planting a native tree as part of the experience. Good Karma will be sent your way.
Ever dreamed of flying? Had life-long aspirations of becoming a pilot and taking control of the wings? Well this one is for you. U-fly gives you the chance to fly a plane all by yourself. Well, kinda. Your friendly flight instructor will take control when needed, but will talk you through the basics and hand over control once in the air.
Scenic flights in this region are full of the finest scenery, with mountains and lakes below, and what better way to take in the views than from the cockpit of a plane that you yourself are flying. If a friend or family member are feeling brave enough, you can also let them tag along for the views.
With a huge range of different shooting experiences, this is a great all weather, all season activity.
